I know, you’re busy. We live in a go go go society. There is ALWAYS something that needs to be done. Sometimes, a healthy lifestyle takes backseat even when it shouldn’t.
Being healthy is a way of life. Healthy habits, make it easy.
If you look at the overall picture of a healthy person, it can appear overwhelming. It seems as if there is always “that person” who can just effortlessly look great, and feel great. Don’t they just make you sick? “Look at them over there doing pull ups, drinking protein shakes, and flexing their muscles, who do they think they are?”
OK, maybe a slight exaggeration there, but I think everyone has felt like this at least once.
Even if you don’t want to be “that person” you can still be in a healthier place by adopting habits over time will help you become healthy as well. And it won’t look so hard. These habits of healthy people will give you a glimpse of working your way towards living the life you crave.
So what are the habits of healthy people?
They wake up early.
Yeah, it sucks to get up at 6AM (or earlier) when you’re warm and toasty in your bed, but just do it anyway.
Imagine having your workout done before 8AM. Or you’re just not rushing to get ready in the morning. I hate feeling rushed because I always feel like I’m forgetting something. The worst.
Getting up early sets your day up for success! Just get up and get moving!
They meal plan, meal prep, or both!
Prepping your meals in advance keeps you from making unhealthy choices. Hungry? Heat up a meal. Want a quick snack? BAM!.. There you go. It’s all done.
Sit down with a notepad and open up Pinterest, Google, whatevs you use to search for meal and snack ideas and plan your meals! Write out your entire grocery list and stick with it when you shop.
I also like to have my meals and snacks ready to go because I enjoy being lazy when I get home.
Even if you don’t want to do a massive meal prep every week you can still stick to your meal plan. Just write out your weekly menu for all meals and have it displayed where you can easily see it. This will help you stay on track!
This one’s a given. Obviously. Healthy people exercise almost daily!
You can do something simple and short! Take a quick walk, do a 10 minute HIIT workout in your living room. Or you can just hit the gym. Whatever is your exercise of choice, get it done!
Switch up your workouts to keep things interesting. Be consistent! Don’t just workout on days you feel like it. Exercise even when you don’t feel like it. The only workout you will regret is the one you didn’t do.
There has been soooo many times when I just didn’t feel like working out and I did it anyway. And the post workout high is real, y’all. No lie.
They follow the 80/20 rule.
What’s the 80/20 rule?
Basically, 80% of the foods you eat are highly nutritious, clean, and overall healthy foods. And that 20%? It’s for foods like pizza, brownies, and ice cream. You know the foods they say you shouldn’t have, and I’m saying you can! Stay happy, not deprived!
Maybe you want to eat perfectly healthy all day and then have some ice cream every night. Maybe you want to eat clean all week and then get some hibachi on the weekend. Go for it.
One unhealthy treat a day, one unhealthy meal a week, is NOT going to undo your weight loss. But you should always keep in mind your portion sizes. Binging once a week isn’t following the 80/20 rule.
They stay hydrated.
Water is where it’s at. And lots of it. I drink a gallon of water every day. Yes, many bathroom breaks are just part of my life and I’ve accepted that.
Staying hydrated keeps your metabolism running smoothly. I’ll take the trade off.
I do get tired of plain water, so I love to drink sparkling water as well. La Croix, AHA, Bubly, you name it, I LOVE IT. And you might catch me drinking 3 cans a day. No shame.
They limit sugar intake.
Sugar can be sneaky. We eat many things without realizing it’s loaded with sugar. Be aware of how much sugar you’re eating. Look at food labels and start tracking your sugar. This will help you reduce how much you’re eating.

They see healthy living as their lifestyle.
Eating healthy and exercising should be a lifestyle. It shouldn’t be “just to lose weight”, make it part of your life. If losing weight is the sole reason you are eating right, then you will likely gain it back once you reach your goal weight.
Making healthy living YOUR lifestyle will keep you at your desired weight.
They practice portion control.
Sure, eating 5 slices of pizza sounds appealing. And to be honest, I could probably do it. Will I? No. Because I’ll be overstuffed and uncomfortable and probably feel guilty.
Use measuring cups and a food scale to help you get used to the right portion sizes if you’re not sure how.
They’re mindful of what they’re eating.
Pay attention to food. If you’re at a convenience store grabbing a snack, are you going to go for a candy bar or a pack of nuts?
Don’t just eat something because it’s easy and convenient. Be aware of what you’re putting in your body and always have a healthy backup snack on you just in case.
They get back on track.
No one is perfect. I’ve had my fair share of overeating chips and salsa at Mexican restaurants. (Hey it’s free!)
I enjoy the indulgence for the meal and then resume my normal healthy eating habits.
Don’t have the all or nothing mindset. “Well, I just ate a doughnut, might as well eat whatever I want for the rest of the day.” This way of thinking will set you up for failure!
If you have a slip-up, that’s okay. Move on.
They eat real food.
Eat whole, nutritious foods. Eat food with the fewest ingredients. These foods should always have a place in each of your meals. Read your labels. Or better yet, buy foods without nutrition labels.. fruits and veggies!
They learn new things.
I love learning new things about health and fitness. I don’t know everything, and when an opportunity presents itself for me to learn something new about my passion, I take it!
Always take the chance to learn more!
They have fun!
Healthy people enjoy their workouts and their healthy meals.
Find a workout you love doing. Find healthy foods you love eating. Don’t just make yourself do a workout you hate. You’re going to end up hating fitness overall, that’s a no go. Experiment and find something you love!
The same thing goes for food too. Eat foods you like. Forcing yourself to eat something you don’t even like will make it a heck of a lot easier to cave and binge on cake. Don’t do it.
